Wines and Wine-Tasting in the Languedoc, south of France

For many of you, a holiday to the south of France will often encompass some sort of wine endeavour, whether it be drinking it, sampling it, learning about it…

The south of France is famous for its wine and the Languedoc is biggest wine-producing area in France, with many appellations you will recognise such as Saint-Chinian AOCs, Corbieres AOC, Minervois AOC, Faugeres, and Coteaux du Languedoc.

The Languedoc hosts many different grape types, both those originating from Rhone and also international varieties.  The former grape types are Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Viognier; the latter grape types are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

If you would like to do some wine-tasting while you visit the Languedoc region, below are some good wine-tasting tours you might like to book:

Les Jardins de Saint Benoit, owned by Garrigae and located in the village of Saint Laurent de la Cabrerisse have their own vineyard, make their own wine, and hold wine-tasting tours.  This beautiful luxury spa resort also has many holiday villas which you may book through our website www.southfranceholidayvillas.co.uk

La Baume wine-tasting tour, located between Beziers and Pezenas, is conducted in English.  Contact us at www.southfranceholidayvillas.co.uk  for more information.

Another excellent place to visit for wine-tasting is the Domaine du Temple which was founded by the Knights Templars.  For more information visit http://www.domainedutemple.fr/

If you just fancy some wine-tasting without taking a tour, you can visit many of the Cave Cooperatives in any region.  They are usually more than happy to let you sample their produce before buying and give you lots of information on their processes.  They may even let you look around their wine-making grounds.  Two such places are Caveau de St Laurent on the main road in Capestang and Cave Cooperative in Cebezan which sells wines made in Cruzy.  In these places, you are able to purchase very good quality wines for very little indeed.

Collioure – the perfect retreat for a holiday!

Breakfast beckons...

Collioure is a beautiful little village at one of the most south-western points of France, near the border of Spain and situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.  It was in this village that Picasso, Derain and Matisse lived and painted.

This little bower of bliss is host to some of the most spectacular views you might see; majestic snow-capped mountains, vast expanses of golden sand and aquamarine water.  It’s no wonder Picasso, Derain and Matisse found such inspiration here.

Being on the coast, there is an abundance of activities to suit all needs; gently sipping wine whilst enjoying the glorious views; any number of water sports; relaxing on the beach; visits to the mountains; wine-tasting; sight-seeing at the chateaux, cathedrals and gorgeous old towns, and much, much more!

What a gorgeous beach!

If you are looking to book a holiday this year, perhaps Collioure is the place for you.  The border of Spain is around a 15 minute drive from Collioure, with Figueras 30 minutes away, Girona 50 minutes away and Barcelona an hour and a half away.

Visit us at www.southfranceholidays.co.uk to book a holiday is this magnificent region.

Room with a View...

Maximising your bookings part II

If you’re renting out a property in the south of France and you would like to maximise your bookings, look at yesterday’s posting and also today’s.

The importance of good towels and bed linen: This might sound silly, but imagine you are in a holiday villa and you have stained, scratchy towels and mismatched, old bed linen.  Whether the rest of the house is luxurious or basic, these small things would really sway your opinion of it.  New towels and bed linen don’t have to be expensive but they can really brighten up a stay in a holiday villa.

Welcome Packs: After a long journey to your holiday villa, you may be very weary.  On arrival at the villa, you find some milk, some fresh French bread, some juice, some fresh fruit, a bottle of wine and some other basics.  This might be just the thing you need to perk you up before you feel like going out and doing battle at the local supermarket.  Welcome Packs don’t need to be large – just thoughtful.

Thoughtful Touches: If you’re staying at a holiday villa for a week, you don’t really want to spend money on a mosquito candle, lots of dishwashing detergent, bin bags, etc.  These things are not very expensive to provide for a season, but they can really make that little bit of difference to clients.

House Manuals:  Leaving a good house manual is essential.  Little details of how to use certain facilities in the house or how to jiggle a strange key can be invaluable.  Similarly, good local restaurants and directions to local tourist attractions are an excellent touch because if you have already discovered some culinary delights in the area, it seems a shame that others might not!
